Donald Trump can’t get Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni out of his deranged head since she publicly slapped down his criticism last month and made him look foolish.
On Sunday evening, the president left the business of state aside long enough to share this photo of Meloni on Truth Social showing the diminutive Italian leader gazing up at him and smiling warmly.
Superimposed atop the image was a message that read:
“Restraining order needed.”
The strange and out-of-the-blue post comes just weeks after a very public falling out between the two leaders.
Recall that Trump had previously praised Meloni, once describing her as a “beautiful young woman” and frequently citing her as one of his favorite European leaders.
But their relationship soured after Trump bizarrely accused her of repeatedly seeking photos with him at the G7 summit and suggested she wanted to repair their friendship to boost her popularity back home.
But Meloni did not take the criticism lying down. She blasted Trump’s “constant, unprovoked attacks” as “senseless” and dismissed his claims about her political standing.
“As for my popularity, being your friend has certainly not helped it, nor does it depend on my relationship with you,” Meloni shot back. “My popularity is none of your concern. I suggest you focus on yours.”
For most world leaders, that exchange would have marked the end of the matter.
Trump, apparently, had one more post left in him.
The “restraining order needed” jab is particularly odd given Trump’s earlier complaint that Meloni was supposedly the one seeking his attention. If that were true, many observers are wondering why the president is still posting about her weeks later.
For someone claiming Meloni couldn’t stop thinking about him, Trump is spending an awful lot of time thinking about her.
