Far-right activist Laura Loomer is facing widespread ridicule after attempting to accuse Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly of inappropriate behavior with a woman at a FIFA World Cup watch party—only for the woman to turn out to be his wife, former Rep. Gabby Giffords.

The controversy began after Kelly shared photos from a World Cup event in Tucson, Arizona, where fans gathered to watch Mexico take on England. Kelly posted several pictures from the celebration, writing:

“Lots of people out in Tucson to watch Mexico take on England. Tucson and La Rosa sure know how to do the World Cup!”

Loomer seized on one of the images, accusing Kelly of being “handsy” with a woman she assumed was not Giffords. She also criticized the senator for wearing a Mexico jersey, suggesting it was inappropriate for a U.S. senator representing a border state.

In her post, Loomer questioned Kelly’s loyalty to his wife and once again referred to Giffords as “medically brain dead”—a description that has long been criticized as false and offensive.

Gabby Giffords, who survived a 2011 assassination attempt that left her with a traumatic brain injury, quickly responded with humor instead of anger.

Quoting Loomer’s post, Giffords simply wrote:

“Well, she looks pretty great to me, @CaptainMarkKelly.”

The response immediately went viral.

Soon afterward, X users added a Community Note to Loomer’s post clarifying that the woman in the photograph was Gabby Giffords herself, confirming what many had already pointed out in the comments.

The incident quickly became one of the platform’s most-discussed political moments of the day, with thousands of users mocking Loomer for failing to recognize Giffords before launching the accusation.

Many commenters also criticized Loomer for once again making disparaging remarks about Giffords’ medical condition. Although Giffords suffered a severe traumatic brain injury after being shot in the head in 2011, she has remained an active public advocate for gun violence prevention and has never been declared “brain dead.”

For many observers, Giffords’ brief, witty response accomplished far more than a lengthy rebuttal ever could. Within minutes, the story had shifted from Loomer’s accusation to yet another example of a viral social media attack collapsing under basic fact-checking.
