The fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by ICE agents is drawing renewed scrutiny after his family and civil rights advocates raised concerns about how federal authorities handled the aftermath of the incident.
According to Juan Proaño, CEO of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), ICE agents allegedly removed Lorenzo’s wallet, cellphone, and other identification before he was transported to the hospital. As a result, hospital staff reportedly admitted him as a John Doe, despite family members already knowing his identity.
Proaño described the family’s experience in an emotional interview on the MeidasTouch podcast, saying Lorenzo’s brother was present at the scene but was not immediately given clear information about what had happened. Instead, he says the family spent hours seeking answers before learning Lorenzo had died.
The situation has become even more difficult because Lorenzo’s mother is undocumented, creating additional legal and administrative obstacles as the family works to identify his body, obtain the necessary paperwork, and arrange his funeral.
The incident has also drawn attention from across the political spectrum. Conservative commentator Bill Kristol questioned whether removing Lorenzo’s personal belongings before he reached the hospital was standard law enforcement procedure or whether it raised concerns about transparency.
Civil rights organizations are now calling for a full, independent investigation into both the shooting itself and the actions taken afterward. They argue the public deserves a clear accounting of what occurred, while Lorenzo’s family deserves timely answers and the opportunity to lay their loved one to rest with dignity.
As questions continue to mount, federal authorities have yet to publicly address many of the allegations surrounding the handling of the case. The investigation remains ongoing, and advocates are urging officials to release all available evidence, including body-camera footage and incident reports, to provide a complete picture of what happened.
